Converting HEIC to PNG gives you a lossless, universally compatible version of an iPhone photo — useful when you need to edit it, preserve maximum quality, or open it in a tool that rejects HEIC. In our sample set, PNG files ran about 209% larger than the HEIC source. Unlike JPG, PNG adds no lossy compression, so it's the better target when the image is headed for editing rather than sharing; the trade-off is a much larger file. Everything converts in your browser, so personal photos stay on your device.

Heads up

Heads up before converting HEIC → PNG

What changes — and what your conversion will cost — based on how HEIC and PNG differ.

Higher bit depth gets clipped

HEIC stores image data at a higher bit depth per channel than PNG encodes by default. Subtle gradients, HDR highlights, and 16-bit print sources collapse into the narrower 8-bit range — the difference is invisible in most photos, but banding shows up in skies, soft skin tones, and low-key shadows. If you need the precision (retouching, print, raw archive), keep the HEIC source and convert a copy.

Best practice

Best practices for HEIC → PNG

Concrete settings to pick before you convert HEIC to PNG.

  • Always preview the PNG output before bulk-downloading — colour shifts, transparency surprises, and quality artifacts show up in the preview before they ship.
  • Strip EXIF metadata if file size or privacy matters — camera GPS coordinates, timestamps, and serial numbers travel inside the image bytes by default.
  • PNG is lossless, so quality settings don't apply — but you can still shave bytes by quantising the palette (pngquant for PNG, gif2webp for GIF) when the image has a limited colour count.
  • Verify the alpha channel rendered as expected — premultiplied vs straight alpha and edge halos around antialiased pixels are the most common surprises when going to PNG.
